About

“Derw” is the Welsh (Cymraeg) translation of Oak, and is the trading name of freelance digital designer Iwan Rhys Roberts. Born and raised in North Wales, now based on the west coast of Scotland, I have a background in Operational Management and understand the challenges of directing a smooth running business, but also the value of an effective brand and website.

I grew up in a family home called The Oaks, and the name represents my business values;

Indigenous –  I’m passionate about the power of family run and local businesses, and their role within community. I help these businesses offer a viable alternative to big corporates; using tech is key to doing just that. Language and traditions are at the heart of who we are and I can offer multi-lingual websites to serve your customers.

Strength – A bold brand and website provides strong roots for a business to grow and succeed in any competitive market.

Hosting and Domain names

Many people don’t know the difference between a domain name and web hosting. Both are essential elements of building a website and have distinct functions.

  • A domain name is a string of characters that identifies a website, e.g. derwdigital.co.uk. It is what users type in their browser to visit your site.
  • Web hosting is a service that provides space on a physical server (somewhere in the world!) for your website files, allowing it to be available to all on the internet. When visitors access your domain name, the hosting provider will transfer those files to their web browsers in a blink of an eye.

You pay seperately for the two and these can be purchased from any of thousands of providers. It’s generally thought best to have them all in one place.
